A few months ago a friend of mine sent me the link for Grindhouse, and it’s been on my calendar ever since. Rose McGowan with a gun for a leg? That’s all I needed to hear! Top it off with the astoundingly talented Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez at the helms of back-to-back features and…well, I don’t know how anyone in their right mind can even think of skipping this one. As if that weren’t enough, Rob Zombie (House of 1000 Corpses) and Eli Roth (Cabin Fever) have also contributed to this opus!
Recently, my curiosity was peaked when Time Out New York did an article on the old grindhouses that used to occupy Times Square. We all know how seedy it used to be with the prostitutes, drug addicts, and nutjobs wandering around causing trouble. But who would ever have thought that a musical version of Mary Poppins could be housed in a once-infamous grindhouse, now known as The New Amsterdam Theater? This is the same place that once showed classy movies like Snuff and The Flying Guillotine!
If the violence, gore, sex, and other tricks we’re sure to be treated to don’t tickle your fancy, surely you’ll want to see what kind of films were shown just a couple decades ago on what’s now called “Disney Row”.
Regardless, I know I’m going to SEE IT. Grindhouse is rated R and opens Friday, April 6th. (Official Site)
