The Cloverfield 1-18-08 Movie Gets a Lame Title

Remember all the hubbub about the new J.J. Abrams production, where Manhattan is mysteriously attacked by some ominous roar? Supposedly it had a fake working title of Cloverfield, but Vulture is now reporting that the movie is (most likely) named Monstrous. Grainy camera-phone pictures show the title on posters for the movie, and Paramount has bought the domain TheMonstrousMovie.com.

Monstrous? That’s the best they could do? Really? Well, I guess Chtulu would be a little hard to pronounce. Judging by all the excitement this movie has already generated, the movie could be called Reading From the Dictionary and it would be a hit.

A TrailerSpy Exclusive: Comments from a Cloverfield (1-18-08) Insider!!

Update (11-19-07): A new, longer trailer just hit the internet. Check it out here.

Man, this Cloverfield thing has been a wild ride these past few days. Ever since the mysterious trailer premiered before the Transformers opening (see the trailer here, by the way), the internet has been hysterical trying to figure out what this movie is really all about.

So far, the only thing we know for sure is that JJ Abrams is an absolute genius. Other than that, information is sketchy at best. The movie’s “official” website is www.1-18-08.com and now features two photographs and nothing else. The “working” title for the film is Cloverfield, but that will suposedly change. And there are two other mysterious sites that seem to be related to the project: EthanHaasWasRight.com and EthanHaasWasWrong.blogspot.com. The first site has a series of five puzzles that you have to solve, at which point you get to see a series of cryptic videos (but why solve the puzzles when you can just check out the videos on YouTube?), and the second site has some strange ramblings that are in the same vein as the videos.

On our site, as on many others, the debate has raged on. A lot of people seem to think that this movie will be a Godzilla remake. Some think it’ll be some sort of Lost spin-off. And a lot of others think it has something to do with a horror/sci fi writer named H.P. Lovecraft. Personally, though, I don’t see why it’s such an odd idea that Abrams has simply come up with a completely original idea for a new movie.

Anyways, to help us answer some of these questions (or maybe just raise a few more), we’ve got a new addition to add to the puzzle. TrailerSpy has been fortunate enough to come across an inside source on the project. He didn’t give us his name (and I’m withholding the nickname he gave himself for his own protection), but I can confirm that he is an actor working on the mysterious Cloverfield project, which he says is currently shooting in L.A. Apparently they’re being as secretive to the talent as they are to the public, but the info he does provide is still pretty juicy.

Here are his full comments:

“I’m working on this shoot, and even we don’t know what it is. Here is what we DO know however:

1) “some” inside source said something about us being on 6th/Main st in downtown LA, true; However, we did not do anything on a fire escape 8 floors up. Everything was shot street level… and nothing on any fire escape.

2) **edited out as it may expose “me” too much**

3) On a take in the scene you all saw (the trailer) at + 30 seconds after impact movie time, just a couple of us were told by Mr Reeves that we are seeing a giant foot stomp down (this is at the point where the tower explodes). Not Godzilla, but it is interesting…

4) Will the Military be firing? One of the Hummers in the downtown shoot had a 50cal mounted on the roof and the gunner was aiming up into the air down the block. He kept swiveling a bit here and there (as directed to do so), but if he is supposed to be firing, it will have to be CGI’d in later as not even blanks were being used. Not pertinent, but perhaps somewhere in the future of this, it will provide a better clue for us to solve this enigma.

Personally, I like that Ethan Haas thing…it kinda makes sense (to me at least) from some of the dialogue I’ve heard.
On one of the nights, the #1 principle was injured during a take and had to be taken for stitches to his head (10 stitches, if anyone is counting), as the other principles “watched” the camcorder playback of the “monster”, some of the verbage they stated could lead to this ethan thing…at least in my head.

The only things we do know is that this is set to be Paramounts blockbuster for next year.. a blockbuster that opens in January is either bad timing or this thing will really set the world on fire. Judging by the amount of interest generated merely by an untitled trailer… I think paramount is onto something.

Would love to say more, but NDA is a bitch and I can only go as far as that…but to be honest, there really isn’t a whole lot more to say.

If you want to see this being filmed on location(*s) and live in the LA area, just watch for the shoot direction signs labeled “Slusho”.
oh, and that brings me to another oddity: The ID tags for the shoot on the trucks say “Slusho: You can’t eat more than 6″ and a drawing of a slurpee like drink.

wtf? Would love to hear people idea of what exactly that means???”

That’s all folks. Let the debate continue…

Update (07-16-07): I added a poll to our original Cloverfield post (where most of the debate has occurred) in order to try and gage the consensus opinion about what this movie is really going to be about. If you have a sec, please add in your vote.

Update (7-24-07): The movie has a title! And it’s lame!

Update (07-09-07): It looks like Paramount is taking the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” approach, because they just officially released the trailer through Apple. I’ve embedded an HD version of it below. On the other hand, if you get nostalgic for the grainy cell-phone camera versions, you can still find them here.

Update (7-24-07): The movie has a title! And it’s lame!

Want to create a viral marketing campaign for your untitled movie? Run a trailer for it before a hot summer blockbuster, and only mention the new movie’s release date. That’s right, before showings of Transformers, a mysterious trailer says little except that it’s a J.J. Abrams film that will open on 1-18-08.

I have my own (very strong) opinions about this trailer, but I’d rather hear your opinions first. Thoughts? Let’s hear ‘em.

Untitled J.J. Abrams movie (with a fake working title of Cloverfield) is not yet rated and opens on 1-18-08. Thanks to Defamer for the tip. Also, check out the movie’s official site and IMDb page.
