Live-Blogging the Oscars Take 2

Last year, when we were still only a blog, Julie tried a fun (and I think successful) experiment, posting her commentary on the Academy Awards ceremony in real-time. Well, since Julie is currently gallivanting around South America, this year the live-blogging honors have been bestowed upon our very capable writer, Rachel.

So hopefully you guys will come back to the site around 8pm EST and play along with us. Rachel’s a very witty girl, and I have no doubt that her running commentary will be nothing short of transcendent (not to put any pressure on her or anything).

The live-blogging will take place on this page here. It’s blank at the moment, but soon it will be filled up. Oh yes, it will most definitely be filled up.

Oh, and if you guys would like to respond to anything Rachel says, or point out some of your own insightful observations, please feel free to use the comments section of this post as your own personal microphone. We here at TrailerSpy love some good audience participation.

Enjoy the Oscars everyone!

What’s Old is New Again

Well, Rachel and I have been exchanging frustrated emails the past couple of weeks about the utter lack of interesting new trailers being released onto the internet lately. That’s why, this weekend, instead of continuing to bang my head against the wall, I decided to do what I often do in times of depression: think back to the good ol’ days.

With that in mind, I spent a fair amount of time this weekend sifting through the ether (aka YouTube) in search of old trailers from some of my favorite all-time movies, which I then ripped and uploaded onto my own site (gotta love modern technology). I’ve added some good ones, and there’s more to come soon.

So if you’re bored and feel like taking a trip down memory lane, check out the new additions to TrailerSpy’s Classic Trailers Page. And if you’re feeling really inspired, you can rate your favorites or even upload a few old trailers from your own favorite movies.

I realize it’s not as exciting as seeing new trailers for films you’ve never seen before, but hey, it still beats spending your time at work doing what your bosses are actually paying you to do.

Feel free to comment here.

Bye Bye Game Trailers, Hello Classic Trailers

I spent some time this weekend making upgrades to the site. Most of them you won’t notice, but the one big one that I thought I should announce is the addition of a Classic Movie Trailers section (and the removal of the Video Game Trailers section).

I had some delusions of grandeur in the beginning that I would have TrailerSpy cover any and every kind of trailer that exists. But I recently had a moment of clarity. This is a movie site, and I’d much rather add lots of trailers from classic movies that I love than a bunch of video game trailers. Plus, I’m not a big enough video game fan to sit through the amount of game trailers that I would have to sit through to really make that section worth visiting.

Right now the Classic Trailers section is pretty bare, but I promise I’ll get some more trailers up there when I have time (and feel free to add your own). Until then, check out the few that are already up there. The trailers for Comedian and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are two of my all-time favorites.

Where in the World is Julie Sandiego?

Remember that great old computer game, Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? I loved tracking Carmen and her henchmen all over the world. This isn´t a post about a movie based on the game (that would definitely be a SEE IT for me.) But if you´ve been wondering where my byline has been, here is the answer.

I´ve always dreamed of seeing the world, and now my guy and I are doing just that. For the past month we have been traveling throughout Ecuador and Peru. This is the beginning of a year-long adventure in which we hope to also visit Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Indonesia, Laos, China, India, Kenya, and Tanzania. If you want to follow our adventures, stop by our trip blog, Globestompers.

TrailerSpy 2.0 (beta)

After a couple months of hard work, I am proud to announce the official launch of the new and improved TrailerSpy!

I’ve had a lot of fun since joining Julie a little less than a year ago to work on TrailerSpy. However, one of my biggest frustrations has been our inability to post the full compliment of movie trailers that arrive online every week. In addition, with only Julie, Rachel and I writing part-time for the site, it was impossible to expand the site to include other types of trailers, such as game trailers and fan-made trailers. With these issues in mind, there was really only one solution going forward: to recruit the help of our visitors.

As you’ll notice from the “Upload!” tab above, we’ve transformed TrailerSpy from a blog into sort of a blog / video-sharing-site hybrid. From now on, visitors will be able to upload trailers directly to the site, just like on YouTube or MetaCafe. And like YouTube, you’ll now be able to rate each trailer, as well as sort the trailers by most viewed, top rated, etc.

This upload feature also allows us to finally expand the site to include game trailers and fan trailers (notice the snazzy new tabs). And perhaps the most exciting part (to me at least) is that independent filmmakers will now be able to upload trailers for their own films, as well (in my opinion, there’s a lot of good indie films out there and not nearly enough avenues to promote them).

Of course, TrailerSpy will still be a blog, as well. As before, Julie, Rachel and I will continue to give our opinions of each upcoming movie and whether to SEE IT, SKIP IT or RENT IT. However, now you’ll only see the newest post displayed on the home page, while the rest of the blog posts will be accessible by clicking the “Featured Trailers” tab up top.

Granted, this new and improved TrailerSpy will probably take a little while to catch on, and I’m sure that there won’t be a whole lot of trailers hosted on the site in the beginning. However, I’m hoping that our visitors (that’s you guys) will help us add to our collection and perhaps even spread the word a bit, and hopefully in the near future TrailerSpy 2.0 will be as fun for you guys to participate in as TrailerSpy 1.0 has been for us.

Anyway, that’s all for now. If you encounter any quirks in the new site, please let me know. And I’d love to hear what you think of it in general.

Trailer Smorgasbord

Alright folks, it’s time for a little heart to heart.

Truth be told, I’ve been a little disappointed with our efforts here at TrailerSpy. It’s not that we haven’t been working hard or that the writing hasn’t been good, but we’re just coming up way too short on the task of actually showing you guys all the trailers for all of the upcoming movies.

The issue is this: there is only so much time in the day, and all of us who write for the site have full-time jobs, and we really just can’t write up these long posts for ALL of the trailers that hit the internet everyday.

With that in mind, I’ve decided to set out on a slightly new course here at TrailerSpy. Essentially, we’re going to be doing the same type of posts about whether we want to SEE IT, SKIP IT or RENT IT. However, we’re also going to try and do a much better job of getting as many trailers to you guys as we possibly can. And if that means occasionally just posting the trailer without the presence of our witty remarks, so be it. This site is called TrailerSpy, and thus, we have an obligation to bring you, if not all the major trailers, at least as many trailers as we can get our hands on.

To ring in this new era here at TrailerSpy, I’ve just posted a virtual smorgasbord of new trailers for you guys.

Additionally, you may also notice that we’ve switch to a new media player. iKlipz has served us well, but I stumbled upon a site called Veoh recently, and I instantly fell in love. For one, the color of the player actually matches our site. But more importantly, it’s just a really high quality player. And best of all, you now have the ability to view the trailers in FULL SCREEN! Just click on the little full screen symbol in the bottom right corner, and a full screen window will pop up.

Anyway, I hope you guys enjoy the trailers below, and more importantly, I hope you guys will enjoy the change of direction we’re taking. After all, we’re doing all this for you guys (and perhaps also for the hope of making some money off this venture).

A Vulture You’ll Like

Another day, another new blog habit. Today is the launch of Vulture, the new culture blog from editors at nymag.com. Considering how addictive nymag’s Daily Intel and Grub Street blogs are, Vulture is a sure thing. In the editors’ own words, “The day that J.K. Rowling, David Chase, and Timbaland announce they’re co-writing a Broadway musical — with Wes Anderson directing and Matthew Barney designing the sets — is the day Vulture will ascend into blog heaven.”

And we’ll be right there with them.

Will Ferrell Movie Generator

I just wanted to direct everyone’s attention to a very funny new spot they have going over at CollegeHumor.

They’ve created a Will Ferrell Movie Generator that creates new Will Ferrell movie plots with the click of a button. It’s madlibs meets…well, actually it’s probably exactly how they come up with movies in Hollywood normally.

Anyways, check it out here. My favorite part is how he always takes off his shirt in the depths of his despair…

Introducing Rachel and Ryan!

Ladies and gentlemen, the search is finally over. After 12 months of exhaustive around-the-clock searching, Julie and I have concluded our nationwide hunt for the two best writers of all-time…

OK, perhaps I’m embellishing a bit.

We actually just wrote a craigslist post and asked for people to submit a sample trailer review, and then we picked the best ones. It really wasn’t that difficult. But I can assure you that even if we had done a year-long, nationwide search, we wouldn’t have come up with two finer writers than Rachel and Ryan, the absolute wittiest people alive… (I’m embellishing again, aren’t I?).

The point is, we have two new writers here at TrailerSpy, and we couldn’t be more pleased. In the next couple days, you’ll see Rachel and Ryan’s inaugural posts, and then hopefully many more after that. We hope you’ll all think as highly of Rachel and Ryan as we do (actually, Julie and I haven’t officially met either of them yet and we don’t really know that much about them, but we can tell by the way they construct their sentences that they’re both wonderful people).
