Hancock: Now That’s My Kind of Movie

Thanks to this TrailerSpy gig, I’m constantly searching the internet to see if there have been any new trailers released lately. However, the majority of the trailers I find are either for movies that really don’t interest me or for movies that I already knew were in the pipeline. But then, every once in a while, I’ll stumble upon a trailer for a movie that I had no idea was being made and which looks frickin’ awesome.

Such was the case with this Hancock trailer. Maybe I just wasn’t paying enough attention, but I had no idea that one of my favorite actors (Will Smith) was making a movie on one of my favorite topics (superheroes). And not only that, the protagonist in this movie is one of my favorite types of protagonist: the anti-hero (or in this case, anti-superhero). In other words, Hancock is about a superhero with serious character flaws, who really could care less about being a superhero. How can you not love that premise?

With the recent spate of cartoon superhero adaptations, it seems to me that this movie is exactly what we need right now. Superman is great and all, but all that do-gooder stuff can get a little boring sometimes. So why not utilize all that great CGI technology to make a superhero who’s a little more interesting. And did you see the scenes with him flying without a cape…tell me that didn’t look pretty cool.

As you may have guessed, Hancock is a SEE IT from me. I’ve been hearing bad things about I Am Legend (which is probably why I haven’t seen it yet), but even if that does flop, it looks like Will Smith has enough good stuff in the works that he won’t completely fall out of the public’s good-graces.

Hancock is not yet rated and opens July 2. (IMDB page)

Juno: Teenage Pregnancy Never Looked So Charming

I only had to hear one thing to make Juno a SEE IT for me: that it re-teams Arrested Development alums Jason Bateman and Michael Cera. Granted, going by the trailer it looks like their characters don’t really have any interactions, but who cares?

Ellen Page (who in Hard Candy managed to scare men everywhere in ways a bunny boiling Glenn Close only wishes she could) is Juno, a teenage girl who finds herself pregnant after a misguided attempt at first-time sex with her awkward male friend (Cera). Rather than terminate the pregnancy, she decides to have the baby and then give it to a couple unable to have children. And what better place to find such a couple than in the local Penny Saver?! It’s there that she finds her ideal couple, played by Bateman and Jennifer Garner, who she attempts to build a friendship with before giving birth to her/their child.

The trailer for Juno gives off a very Little Miss Sunshine vibe in that it looks to be a mixture of quirkiness, bizarre charm, and a little bit of melancholy. The combination definitely worked for Sunshine, and with a cast like this being directed by the Thank You For Smoking director, Jason Reitman, I definitely think that Juno has more than a good chance of making the formula work for itself.

Juno is rated PG-13 and opens in limited release December 14. (Official site)

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium: I Feel Like a Kid in a Candy Store

I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time. I thought that Stranger Than Fiction was the best script written in years, so when I heard that Zach Helm, the writer of Stranger Than Fiction, had another project in the pipeline, my mouth instantly started to water.

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium looks like a complete 180 from Stranger Than Fiction, and unfortunately, it doesn’t seem nearly as original. However, given the brilliance of his last film, I’m willing to give Mr. Helm the benefit of the doubt. Although Helm has never directed before, I’m confident that Dustin Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and Jason Bateman will keep the film going on the right course. If nothing else, it should be a fun couple of hours.

I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely going to SEE IT.

Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium is not yet rated and opens on Thanksgiving. (Official Site)

The Ex: Exactly The Kind of Movie They Should Be Making

I get frustrated sometimes when I see the people that we choose to “celebrate” in our society. It’s sad to know that the next album Britney Spears puts out will probably go platinum, and yet there are so many talented musicians out there who can’t even get a record contract. And it’s depressing to know that Nicolas Cage’s new movie will probably gross a couple hundred million, and yet so many really good actors are out doing off-Broadway plays, struggling to even get noticed.

But then every once in a while, miraculously, we seem to get it right. Every once in a while, we celebrate people because they’re talented and not just because they’re, well, celebrities. And every once in a while, you see a celebrity who actually seem like they’d be a nice person in real life and not a jackass.

That was my first thought when I saw the preview for The Ex. It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know that a movie starring Zach Braff, Jason Bateman, and Amanda Peet will probably be a huge success. If I had to make a list of the top ten celebrities I’d most like to hang out with, those three would all be on that list.

So yeah, The Ex is definitely a SEE IT for me. With three of my favorite actors and a trailer that makes the movie look hilarious, I don’t really see a whole lot of downside. Plus, there’s nothing I love more than some good wheelchair humor. I mean, if we can’t make fun of crippled people, who can we make fun of? Am I right? Anyone? OK, maybe not.

The Ex is rated PG-13 and opens May 11. (Official Site)
