You Don’t Mess With the Zohan: Or the Sandler

I’ve been watching Adam Sandler for almost two decades now, and the entire time, I’ve been thinking the same thing: “What the hell is it that makes this guy so damn funny?” And to this day, I haven’t been able to figure it out.

Do you guys remember Sandler’s Halloween bit on Saturday Night Live, where he went on Weekend Update and described some possible Halloween costumes? But instead of elaborate costumes, he’d just use some minor prop (like a newspaper) to make a silly character. “Hey, I’m crazy newspaper face…now gimme some candy!” And for some reason, each character was hilarious.

Well, it seems to me that Sandler has taken that bit and stretched it out into a unbelievably successful movie career. Instead of creating elaborate characters by drastically altering his personality or appearance (i.e. acting), Sandler has basically just used minor character devices and then proceeded to act like himself but with a funny voice. “Hey, I’m a crazy waterboy who plays football.” “Look at me, I’m a crazy 1980’s wedding singer.” “Hey, I’m a crazy gay firefighter…” And for some reason, it’s been hilarious every time.

But I guess maybe there just isn’t anything complicated to figure out. Maybe it’s just that good old fashion “it factor.” I mean, the guy is obviously one of the funniest men in Hollywood, and apparently anything he does is going to be funny. Period.

Which is why this new movie, You Don’t Mess With the Zohan, is an automatic SEE IT for me. I don’t know why, but I know this movie is going to be funny. Because it’s Sandler, and he always cracks me up, even if all he’s doing in this film is putting on a funny Israeli accent and saying “Look at me, I’m a crazy Mossad agent turned New York hairdresser…now gimme your money!” And give him my money, I will.

You Don’t Mess With the Zohan is not yet rated and opens June 6. (IMDB page)

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry: Umm…I Do?

Movie trailers are obviously crucial to the film industry. Without trailers, many movies would never get noticed and therefore wouldn’t make a dime (not to mention that there’d be no reason for a site called TrailerSpy).

But sometimes a movie idea is so good that there really is no need for a trailer. Sometimes an idea can generate such immediate buzz that even if they just showed a trailer of some guys watching TV for two and a half minutes, the movie would still make a killing at the box-office.

Such is the case with I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.

The reality is that I signed up to see this movie long before this trailer ever dropped. In fact, my future was decided the minute some writer walked into a producer’s office and said, “What if two New York City firefighters were forced to get married to protect their pensions…” and the producer cut in, “that’s great…and Adam Sandler and Kevin James should play the firemen!” And just like that, I became $11 poorer. Unbeknownst to me, those two men had just reached into my wallet and stolen my hard-earned money.

But I’m OK with that. In fact, that’s what I love about the movies. In a world where most people are convinced that everything’s been done already, and that every movie’s just a regurgitation of another, there’s still the opportunity to come up with that one great idea that essentially sells itself.

Yes, this movie is definitely a SEE IT for me, if only because I think we should all celebrate the fact that good ideas still have a place in the art of filmmaking. Oh, and also because I want to see Jessica Biel in her underwear.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry is not yet rated and opens July 20. (Official Site)

Reign Over Me: never thought I’d see Sandler and Cheadle on the same bill.

So we’ve come to a fairly major decision here at TrailerSpy. Up until now, we’ve mainly posted trailers for movies that are opening soon, along with a bit of commentary. But it has occured to us recently that, while our commentaries are incredibly witty and insightful, we’re not exaclty offering you guys any novel information. After all, by the time we post the trailer on our site, you’ve probably seen it fifty times already on TV.

For this reason, we’ve decided to make a serious effort to bring you more new trailers, trailers that have just been released by the studios onto the internet. This will require a little bit of digging and searching on our part, but given that fact that we’re named TrailerSpy, we should be willing to do a little sleuth work.

With this goal in mind, I wanted to post the trailer for the new Adam Sandler movie, which has only been available online for a couple days. I’m pretty excited about this one, mostly because I loved seeing Sandler’s serious side in Punch-Drunk Love. I’m also damned curious to see how Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle are going to mesh together on the big screen.

Reign Over Me is rated R and opens March 23. (Official Site)
