Update (11-19-07): A new, longer trailer just hit the internet. Check it out here.
Man, this Cloverfield thing has been a wild ride these past few days. Ever since the mysterious trailer premiered before the Transformers opening (see the trailer here, by the way), the internet has been hysterical trying to figure out what this movie is really all about.
So far, the only thing we know for sure is that JJ Abrams is an absolute genius. Other than that, information is sketchy at best. The movie’s “official” website is www.1-18-08.com and now features two photographs and nothing else. The “working” title for the film is Cloverfield, but that will suposedly change. And there are two other mysterious sites that seem to be related to the project: EthanHaasWasRight.com and EthanHaasWasWrong.blogspot.com. The first site has a series of five puzzles that you have to solve, at which point you get to see a series of cryptic videos (but why solve the puzzles when you can just check out the videos on YouTube?), and the second site has some strange ramblings that are in the same vein as the videos.
On our site, as on many others, the debate has raged on. A lot of people seem to think that this movie will be a Godzilla remake. Some think it’ll be some sort of Lost spin-off. And a lot of others think it has something to do with a horror/sci fi writer named H.P. Lovecraft. Personally, though, I don’t see why it’s such an odd idea that Abrams has simply come up with a completely original idea for a new movie.
Anyways, to help us answer some of these questions (or maybe just raise a few more), we’ve got a new addition to add to the puzzle. TrailerSpy has been fortunate enough to come across an inside source on the project. He didn’t give us his name (and I’m withholding the nickname he gave himself for his own protection), but I can confirm that he is an actor working on the mysterious Cloverfield project, which he says is currently shooting in L.A. Apparently they’re being as secretive to the talent as they are to the public, but the info he does provide is still pretty juicy.
Here are his full comments:
“I’m working on this shoot, and even we don’t know what it is. Here is what we DO know however:
1) “some” inside source said something about us being on 6th/Main st in downtown LA, true; However, we did not do anything on a fire escape 8 floors up. Everything was shot street level… and nothing on any fire escape.
2) **edited out as it may expose “me” too much**
3) On a take in the scene you all saw (the trailer) at + 30 seconds after impact movie time, just a couple of us were told by Mr Reeves that we are seeing a giant foot stomp down (this is at the point where the tower explodes). Not Godzilla, but it is interesting…
4) Will the Military be firing? One of the Hummers in the downtown shoot had a 50cal mounted on the roof and the gunner was aiming up into the air down the block. He kept swiveling a bit here and there (as directed to do so), but if he is supposed to be firing, it will have to be CGI’d in later as not even blanks were being used. Not pertinent, but perhaps somewhere in the future of this, it will provide a better clue for us to solve this enigma.
Personally, I like that Ethan Haas thing…it kinda makes sense (to me at least) from some of the dialogue I’ve heard.
On one of the nights, the #1 principle was injured during a take and had to be taken for stitches to his head (10 stitches, if anyone is counting), as the other principles “watched” the camcorder playback of the “monster”, some of the verbage they stated could lead to this ethan thing…at least in my head.
The only things we do know is that this is set to be Paramounts blockbuster for next year.. a blockbuster that opens in January is either bad timing or this thing will really set the world on fire. Judging by the amount of interest generated merely by an untitled trailer… I think paramount is onto something.
Would love to say more, but NDA is a bitch and I can only go as far as that…but to be honest, there really isn’t a whole lot more to say.
If you want to see this being filmed on location(*s) and live in the LA area, just watch for the shoot direction signs labeled “Slusho”.
oh, and that brings me to another oddity: The ID tags for the shoot on the trucks say “Slusho: You can’t eat more than 6″ and a drawing of a slurpee like drink.
wtf? Would love to hear people idea of what exactly that means???”
That’s all folks. Let the debate continue…
Update (07-16-07): I added a poll to our original Cloverfield post (where most of the debate has occurred) in order to try and gage the consensus opinion about what this movie is really going to be about. If you have a sec, please add in your vote.
Update (7-24-07): The movie has a title! And it’s lame!

I think I found something. On EthanHaasWasWrong.blogspot.com there is reference to the “C’thulhu”. I looked this up and found what I think the movie may be about. Google this and Wikipedia it and you’ll see what I mean. It is some sort of giant squid like sea monster, maybe you all have already found this but just incase you hadn’t.
ok here are some of the links I found that I think are set up by the movie for the movie, you can follow these links to everything, what the C’thulhu is, use to be worshiped as Gods by people and that some day they would destroy the world, here are the links:
http://www.cthulhu.org/cthulhu/index.html
http://www.cthulhuthemovie.com/
http://www.keltart.com/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu
in H. P. Lovecraft’s novels these monsters are referred to as the old ones, I think this has a lot to do with the movie although I could be wrong.
Gabriel, from what I could tell, the Cthulhu references were posted by people in the comments section, not anywhere in the EthanHaasWasWrong.Blogspot.com website itself. And one of the links you gave is actually to a movie that’s just recently been made about Cthulhu (apparently starring Tori Spelling), so that would cast further doubt about Cloverfield being about H.P. Lovecraft’s character, Cthulhu.
Wow. This is turning into a bigger deal than the NIN “Year Zero” promo which shared many of the same characteristics.
Slusho is a slurpee from jj’s show alias.
I have been tracking and searching as much as I can regarding the prophecies of Ethan Haas, and I’m tracking them on my site here: http://digitalspaghetti.tooum.net
Some interesting details have come up in relation to a small palaeolithic village in the Ukraine

Pure wishful thinking by the Lovecraft fans………
“Since when did Cthullu come wading out of New York Harbor and start busting shit up?

Well since Cthulhu didnt live in the same time period he couldnt come out of the sea to destroy man…
Man it really got my eye. Got me all intense. I can’t wait for it to come out. Love the way they used the home camera. Different, and creative from most trailers that come out. So if the trailer is good and very intresting then defentily the movie is going to be very good.
none of the old ones have powers like the being in the video.
there is NO chance this has ANYTHING to do with the Cthulhu mythos.
none AT ALL.
[…] Source: Trailer Spy via Cinematical […]
First of all, the Cthulhu movie with Tori Spelling is the kind of bad movie that typically comes out before ANOTHER block buster with a similar theme in order to pre-capitalize on the buzz…..as happens with virtually EVERY grand scale adaptation. So why did this badly made Cthulhu movie come out of the blue?
Second, who said Cthulhu ‘lived’ in another time? In Lovecrafts story he’s sleeping at the bottom of the Ocean waiting for the stars to be right to rise and lay waste to mankind…
And, how does anyone know what Cthulhu’s powers were….he hasn’t risen yet, but he did rule travel space and rule the earth billions of years ago.
while a cthulu themed film of this scale would be incredibly sweet for a rabid fan of the mythos such as myself…i doubt that it will be. though there are some thematic elements that make me pause. in any event, cthulu lies in the sunken city of ry’leh which in the story is somewhere in the south pacific and not the atlantic. so attacking ny is a bit far off from where it would come from. /shrug either way this marketing is intrigingly insidious.
I think if it were to eb Cthulu, he would get owned, because of what man had back then compared to what mankinds inventions are now, he probably wounld’t stand a chance all they have to do is evacuate the city a nuke the damn place. But alot of rumors have been going on around other sites that either it’s a “Giant Lion” (Ok, weird), or its a Evangelion based movie, Evangelion is an anime by the way, and the reason alot of people thought it was a lion is because when they are outside, and that guy ran and said “I saw it, It’s alive, It’s HUGE!” people probably mistakend it for “I saw it, It’s a Lion, It’s HUGE”. So that basically takes the Lion out of the picture, that leaves Enagelion. Heres a link for those you don’t know what Evangelion is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangellion
Also alot of people thought it is a Voltron based movie, heres a link to Voltron for those who don’t know who he is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voltron
But, I highly dout it’s going to be a Cthulu movie. What if it turns out to be some sort of Dragon like monster?
-Adonis
Mr. Abrams has stated that this movie is ORIGINAL
but… there are stories conisdered original in the Cthulhu Mythos…
i HIGHLY doubt that its Cthulhu
why? cus Cthulhu rocks.
And Adonis, Cthulhu lived in a time before time, what man had back then wouldnt matter becasue man did not exist, the Great Old Ones came before the primordial ooze and built magnificent cities
that were destroyed when they were enprisoned by the Elder Gods. If the Call was heard and Cthulhu came back, Cthulhu would own everyone. Again, why? Cus hes CTHULHU hes a giant squidmonsterpriest that drives men mad at the mere SITE of him
BWAHAHAAHAHAAA
so yea
it probably isnt Cthulhu though…
[…] Monstrous? That’s the best they could do? Really? Well, I guess Chtulu would be a little hard to pronounce. Judging by all the excitement this movie has already generated, the movie could be called Reading From the Dictionary and it would be a hit. […]
Adonis I believe your right about the Evangelion bit. I hear a man ask “Where’s Genesis, Has anyone seen Genesis?” in the back ground during the explosion.
well just to let everybody know this 1.18.08 becomes the movie called Voltron reason why i made my homework. and if them why not but this movie will take people for a good ride just like the transformers, so please take my word for it because Voltron has arrived on 1.18.08.
