I should point out up front that the real reason I decided to post about this film is because they put out a red band trailer for it (which is the one I posted). As I’ve said before, I’m a big fan of turning this censorship thing on its head by using the redband trailer as a promotional device. Plus, it gives me another chance to advertise my top red band trailers list.

Aside from the red band, though, I do find this movie somewhat appealing. Most importantly, I think it’s about time that we shed a little light on how out of touch most home-schooled kids end up being. I work with a guy who was home-schooled, and he really just doesn’t get it. I feel bad for him because he’s the nicest guy in the world, but when it comes to women and going out and really just any social interaction, he’s lightyears behind where he should be. And I can tell from this trailer that The Brothers Solomon captures that reality pretty well.

Unfortunately, Will Arnett (from Arrested Development) and Will Forte (from SNL) are not really bankable stars, and I’m pretty sure this movie will bomb because of it. But I hope that it finds at least a moderate audience.

Personally, I’m going to RENT IT, simply because I think I’ll find it just as funny in my living room as I would in the theater. But I definitely encourage everyone to see it one way or the other, especially if you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting a former home-schooler.

The Brothers Solomon is rated R and opens September 7. (Official Site)

P.S. I hope I didn’t offend any of you home-school people that may be reading this right now. It’s not that I think you’re bad people or that your parents made a bad choice in teaching you themselves (lord knows our school systems are shit); it’s just that I find your resulting lack of social skills rather amusing.
