The Oscars are coming, the Oscars are coming! Oscar mania officially kicked off this morning when Salma Hayek announced the nominees. (In case you missed the telecast, one of the best moments was Salma’s reaction to the news that her pal Penelope Cruz got a nomination.) I couldn’t have been more thrilled that Dreamgirls was shut out of the top categories, and that Little Miss Sunshine swooped in instead. Ryan Gosling snagged the darkhorse nomination for Best Actor, and now I must rent Half Nelson. How many members of the Academy will vote for Sacha Baron Cohen for Best Adapted Screenplay just so they can hear his speech?

While it’s, of course, “an honor to be nominated,” I think there’s something to be said for the fact that Dreamgirls wouldn’t win Best Picture with competition like this. I think the film should be thrilled with the noms for Hudson, Murphy and THREE of its songs, and call it a day.
By the way, have people even heard that song “Listen”? It’s amazing…
Actually, I thought the song “Listen” was one of the best parts of the movie. Beyonce sang her heart out and really impressed me with her acting ability during that moment. Dreamgirls was good, it just wasn’t great.
What was funny to me were the reactions of other audience members… Being generally over-the-top myself, I wasn’t stunned by the musical-theater-ness of the production (it originally was, after all, a Tony Award-winning musical), but when the guy who was playing the brother started singing to Effie about how she has to suck up her pride and deal with it because they’re family, and especially when they ended with a big group hug, some folks in the theater really couldn’t hold back the laughter… And I didn’t necessarily blame them.
But yeah… “Listen”… kind of shocking how phenomenal Beyonce’s performance was, especially before seeing the movie, all I kept hearing was how she was second-rate and nothing compared to Jennifer Hudson.
Good Movie, sure. Great movie? No. Jennifer deserved an Oscar nod, that girl owned it. Eddie Murphey seemed better than he was because he has sucked for 10 years.
